Asociaci\u00f3n Torrijos 1831.- Sin duda, ha sido el a\u00f1o que las actividades de las Jornadas de homenaje a Torrijos y la Constituci\u00f3n han tenido mayor eco en el mundo angloparlante. Desde London Derry se ha trasladado el periodista Ciaran O\u00b4Neill que ha recogido con entrevistas y el buen uso de su c\u00e1mara un exhaustivo y amplio documental, con las figuras principales de Torrijos y Robert Boyd. O\u00b4Neill ha operado en el Centro de Interpretaci\u00f3n Hist\u00f3rico Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Torrijos, Cruz de El Bulto, Cementerio Ingl\u00e9s y Plaza de la Merced, siguiendo todas las recreaciones hist\u00f3ricas del 11 de diciembre realizadas por la Asociaci\u00f3n Hist\u00f3rico Cultural Torrijos 1831. \u00abThe city of Malaga remembered, as usual, on Wednesday a local hero, General Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Torrijos y Uriarte, who was shot along with 48 companions after rising up against the absolutist rule of King Fernando VII in 1831. A procession of the Asociaci\u00f3n Hist\u00f3rico-Cultural Torrijos 1831 set out in the morning from the San Andr\u00e9s convent to the memorial cross to Torrijos in El Bulto, where a wreath was laid. The procession then continued to the English Cemetery, which is the resting site of Robert Boyd, an Irishman whom Torrijos persuaded to join his cause when exiled in London.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Homage was paid here to the bravery and internationalist outlook of Boyd, before the procession moved on to its last stop, the Plaza de la Merced. This is the resting place of Torrijos and all of his companions bar Boyd.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In a ceremony attended by the city’s mayor, Francisco de la Torre, several more wreaths were laid by civic organisations at the foot of the obelisk dedicated to the general and his men. A reenactment of the execution of Torrijos and his companions was carried out by the association and Torrijos’ last letter to his wife was read out.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Irish links<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Also in attendance at the day’s events was Irish journalist Ciaran O’Neill, who was in Malaga filming an independent documentary about Robert Boyd. The story of Boyd, like O’Neill a native of Londonderry, caught his attention after the Asociaci\u00f3n’s Jos\u00e9 Antonio Sierra gave a talk on him at the town’s Central Library this summer. O’Neill admits he had not even heard of Boyd until this talk, but was immediately fascinated by his story. \u00abIt’s an amazing tale of how this young Irishman gave up his fortune\u00bb – Boyd had inherited around 4,000 pounds from his father- , and poured it all into Torrijos’ project – \u00aband ultimately his life, for a cause in a country that he had never even been to.\u00bb<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Torrijos and his followers aimed to overthrow the despotic King Fernando VII and restore liberal, constitutional rule to Spain. After several months of fairly blatant plotting in Gibraltar, an attempt at an insurrection was launched.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

However, Torrijos had been betrayed by someone known only as ‘Viriato’, thought to be a pseudonyn of a trusted collaborator, and he and his men were captured at Alhaur\u00edn de la Torre.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

They were shot on San Andr\u00e9s beach on 11 December. Later, he came to be celebrated as a liberal hero, and the obelisk to him and his followers in the famous Plaza de la Merced was erected in 1848″.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tipo de Asociaci\u00f3n: cultural, dedicada a la investigaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica, y recreadora en sus actuaciones en p\u00fablico para exponer los hechos que representa. Inscrita en el Registro de Asociaciones de la Junta de Andaluc\u00eda. Inici\u00f3 su periodo constituyente en el a\u00f1o 2002, siendo legalizada en 2003. Fue un proyecto original desde el principio, pues en Espa\u00f1a no se hab\u00eda creado anteriormente una Asociaci\u00f3n sobre el personaje hist\u00f3rico de Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Torrijos y Uriarte, h\u00e9roe de la Guerra de Independencia y defensor de las libertades y derechos constitucionales frente al poder absoluto del reinado de Fernando VII. Original en las formas, dedicaci\u00f3n y fines, que recogen sus estatutos, cimentando sus antecedentes en los precursores que trabajaron sobre el personaje de Torrijos en la provincia de M\u00e1laga, en las d\u00e9cadas de los a\u00f1os ochenta y noventa del siglo XX y primeros a\u00f1os del XXI, y en la raz\u00f3n fundamental y objetiva que como texto legal marca la fecha de legalizaci\u00f3n de su fundaci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/strong>
\nComo colectivo de recreaciones hist\u00f3ricas es el m\u00e1s antiguo de las dedicados al siglo XIX, en Andaluc\u00eda, y el segundo en M\u00e1laga en la especialidad general de recreaciones hist\u00f3ricas, s\u00f3lo superado por \u00abEl Paso\u00bb de Riogordo (1953). Por esa antig\u00fcedad ambos colectivos est\u00e1n hermanados.<\/span><\/strong>
\nEn cuanto a las representaciones relativas a la Guerra de la Independencia en las que participa la Asociaci\u00f3n, la recreaci\u00f3n insignia, creada en 2007, es el \u00abRegimiento de Infanter\u00eda de M\u00e1laga\u00bb, unidad titular de M\u00e1laga, que salvo un periodo de disoluci\u00f3n, tuvo vida castrense desde 1701 a 1893, siendo su historial heredado por el Regimiento Melilla en sus diferentes numeraciones, y que fue disuelto en M\u00e1laga, en 1985.
